FOCUS FORWARD 2021 ANNUAL REPORT National Industries for the Blind LETTER FROM THE CHAIRPERSON & PRESIDENT In fiscal year 2022 NIB laid the foundation for growth as we progressed out of the pandemic. Despite challenges such as supply chain disruptions, soaring inflation, and decreased demand for textiles and office products, NIB played a critical role in enhancing the independence of people who are blind and built innovative new pathways to increase employment opportunities. Fully incorporated with its own board of directors, NIB’s talent management enterprise, NSITE, launched NSITE U, a centralized hub for professional training, online and asynchronous courses, group training programs and networking opportunities. In FY2022 alone, 316 people who are blind or visually impaired accessed training and 44 launched new careers. NIB increased opportunities in the Contract Management Support (CMS) program by expanding training to include closure of grants and cooperative agreements. This new initiative boosts the CMS customer base to include universities, colleges, hospitals, and private-sector government contractors, providing new, knowledge-based careers in the high-demand field of contract administration. With support from our board of directors, NIB embarked on a program designed specifically to assist small, nonproducing agencies in creating jobs within and outside the AbilityOne® Program. A new department, Agency Support, offers the tools and assistance small and emerging agencies need to secure public and private sector opportunities that empower people who are blind. NIB celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Advocates for Leadership and Employment program that educates people who are blind on the public policy process and equips them with the confidence, and poise to engage elected officials and senior policymakers. All these efforts were bolstered by the AbilityOne Commission’s publication of Policy 51.542, requiring AbilityOne agencies to use AbilityOne products in the performance of AbilityOne service contracts. Adopted in July, the policy is already having a positive impact as agencies report a significant increase in inquires related to product sourcing, pricing, and availability. We invite you to join us as the groundwork laid this year brings exciting new opportunities to the people at the heart of our mission in 2023 and beyond. Signature PAUL M. HEALY, PH.D., A.C.A.
