5 Tips for a Barbecue to Remember

Summer brings with it one of the great American pastimes: barbecue. Backyards are filled with the smell of briquette smoke and sounds of sizzling delectables on the grill. How do you make a flame-grilled feast stand out? After all, do you really want to be known as the house that only barbecues burgers and dogs? Wouldn’t it be nice to be the grill master by whom all others are judged? Here are five tips to help you throw an epic barbecue.

A theme will tell the story. Go with classics such as Texan, Hawaiian, Mexican, Middle Eastern, Cajun, Korean, or Southern style. The food can also dictate your theme: a seafood menu or an all-meat option, or perhaps even an all-vegetarian spread -- you don’t have to be vegetarian to enjoy a veggie burger! Get creative and make it fun with a theme that's totally off the wall, like “things that start with the letter ‘B'—bacon, brats, brussels sprouts, bocce ball”—or BYFS (Bring Your Favorite Sauce). The sky is the limit!

Coordinate your decorations and colorful accessories! Skip the bland white flatware and go with Caribbean Blue or Kiwi Green to add a splash of color to an often-overlooked necessity. Purchase SKILCRAFT Premium Summer Flatware from your local commissary in your color of choice and you can casually mention how your purchase creates jobs for Americans who are blind! Doing good and dressing up the place settings never felt better!

Now that you have your theme and decorations, pick a main entrée and a few sides. When it comes to barbecue, know how to cook your meat! A meat thermometer is one of the most important pieces of equipment you can own. No sauce, marinade, rub, or glaze can cover up meat that is overcooked. Keep it simple by cooking the meat properly and sprinkling on a little sea salt or your favorite seasoning at the end. Pick sides that match your theme and grill everything at once! Veggies, fruit, bread—plop it all on the grill!

Attention to detail will go a long way to give your theme the added punch you are looking for. Pick a theme-related beverage that isn’t the obvious choice. A five-minute internet search can give you some great ideas! Another often-overlooked detail is bread. Think about it: You pick out a choice piece of meat, marinade it, rub it, and slow cook it for hours only to slap it on a piece of white bread with some sauce. Put in a little extra effort with a really delicious bread, roll, tortilla, or bun that compliments your theme and your meat! Don’t overlook the importance of good toppings either. Yellow mustard and ketchup might be great for the kids’ hot dogs, but even something a little out of the ordinary will make a world of difference. Think kimchi, gourmet sauerkraut, grilled onions, or even some fruit like grilled pineapple.

Issue some invitations and prepare to have fun! Invite those friends who will go all in with you on a themed event…and even the more reserved ones. Serve up the fun drinks and pick out a game or two. Typical summer games like horseshoes and bean bags are the go-to, but if you are limited on space, make it a conversation game. Write a few offbeat questions that go with your theme on notecards and and get everyone involved discussing possible answers. The only limit is your creativity!

Use these tips the next time you fire up the grill, and take your barbecue to a whole new level.

"Finding work was a challenge. Whenever my eyesight came up, job interviews pretty much ended. Then I learned about NIB. Today I manage a team of 20 people who are blind, providing quality products to the U.S. military and their families. And just like the military, my team always gives 100%."
