NIB Mission Statement
Since 1938, NIB has focused on enhancing the opportunities for economic and personal independence of people who are blind, primarily through creating, sustaining and improving employment. NIB and its network of associated nonprofit agencies are the nation’s largest employer of people who are blind through the sale of SKILCRAFT® and other products and services provided by the AbilityOne® Program, established by the Javits-Wagner-O’Day Act.
Despite continued gains in employment, people who are blind remain one of the nation’s greatest untapped labor resources. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the jobless rate for people with a disability is about twice as high as the rate for people without a disability. This statistic fuels NIB’s mission to create, sustain and improve employment opportunities for people who are blind.
Today, NIB focuses not only on creating jobs, but on developing careers through challenging, knowledge-based positions in high-energy, quality work environments. NIB works with a nationwide network of associated nonprofit agencies offering a wide range of career opportunities, supporting them in business development, program management, and marketing and sales.
